Florida State cruises past No. 10 VCU

Men’s basketball: Ian Miller scored 22 points and Devon Bookert added 18 to help Florida State cruise past No. 10 VCU 85-67 on Thursday night at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan.

Montay Brandon added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Seminoles (4-0).

Treveon Graham had 14 points to lead the Rams (3-1), who were denied their first 4-0 start since the 1993-94 season.

• Lobos hold off Blazers in 2OT: Cleveland Thomas hit a 3-pointer with 39.5 seconds left in the second overtime to give No. 19 New Mexico (3-0) the lead for good in a 97-94 win over UAB (3-1) at the Charleston (S.C.) Classic.

The Lobos forced OT on Kendall Williams’ desperation 3 as time ran out to tie it 75-all. Then Alex Kirk hit a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left in the first overtime as New Mexico dug its way out of an 86-81 hole to gain another period.

• UConn hangs on to beat BC: Ryan Boatwright made two big free throws with 7.9 seconds to play and blocked a 3-point attempt at the buzzer, and No. 18 Connecticut (5-0) held on to a 72-70 win over Boston College (1-4) in the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Wounded Warrior Project in New York.

The Huskies play Indiana for the title tonight at Madison Square Garden.

Thunder maintain perfect home record

NBA: Kevin Durant had 28 points and eight assists, Serge Ibaka scored 17 points and blocked three shots and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the visiting Los Angeles Clippers 105-91.

Russell Westbrook added 12 points for Oklahoma City, which has won its first five home games of the season for the first time since the 2004-05 season, when the franchise was in Seattle.

• Clippers’ Barnes needs eye surgery: Clippers forward Matt Barnes needs surgery to repair a retinal tear in his left eye, an injury he sustained against Memphis on Monday.

He’s expected to miss at least two weeks.

• Rockets’ Howard fined for ball toss: Houston center Dwight Howard has been fined $25,000 for throwing the ball into the stands late in the Rockets’ loss in Dallas Wednesday night.

Bortles leads No. 17 UCF over Rutgers

College football: Blake Bortles passed for one touchdown and ran for another, helping No. 17 Central Florida dominate Rutgers 41-17 in Orlando, Fla., to remain unbeaten in the American Athletic Conference.

Bortles threw a 4-yard TD pass to Breshad Perriman in the opening quarter and the Knights (9-1, 6-0) scored on their first four offensive possessions to build a 28-7 lead over the Scarlet Knights (5-5, 2-4).

Hoffman grabs 1-shot lead at Pebble Beach

Golf: Morgan Hoffman took the first-round lead at the Pebble Beach (Calif.) Invitational, shooting a 7-under 65 at Spyglass Hill.

Hoffman has a one-stroke lead on fellow PGA Tour players Chesson Hadley, Ted Potter Jr., Scott Brown and defending champion Tommy Gainey. Gainey, Hadley and Brown all were at par-72 Del Monte Golf Course. Potter Jr. had his 66 at Spyglass Hill.

• England’s Nixon leads in South Africa: A late charge gave England’s Matthew Nixon an 8-under 64 and a one-shot lead after the first round of the South African Open in Johannesburg, the start of the 2014 European Tour season.

Two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen (66) and former Masters winner Charl Schwartzel (67) also were in early contention.

• Streelman, Bjorn share World Cup lead: Kevin Streelman and Thomas Bjorn each shot a 5-under 66 to share the lead after the first day of the World Cup in Melbourne, Australia.

K.J. Choi, Martin Laird and Stuart Manley were tied for third, one stroke behind Streelman and Bjorn.

• Ko makes LPGA debut: Lydia Ko overcame an early double bogey with three birdies on the back nine for a 1-under 71 in her pro debut at the LPGA Titleholders in Naples, Fla. The 16-year-old New Zealander already has won two LPGA Tour events. She does not officially become a member until next year.

Sandra Gal birdied her first six holes and rallied late with two more birdies for an 8-under 64 and a two-shot lead over Anna Nordqvist.

Roy guides Blues over Bruins in shootout

NHL: Derek Roy scored once in regulation and again in the fourth round of the shootout as the visiting St. Louis Blues beat the Boston Bruins 3-2.

Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 shots in regulation, two more in the overtime and three in the shootout for St. Louis. .

• Avalanche top Coyotes in OT: Ryan O’Reilly scored a power-play goal with 41 seconds left in overtime and the Colorado Avalanche bounced back after allowing two third-period goals to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 4-3 in Glendale, Ariz.
