Obituary: Compton, Valarie Fredekind

Age 74

COMPTON, Valarie Fredekind July 28, 1939 - November 21, 2013 Of Spokane, passionate philanthropist, world traveler, activist, and volunteer, passed away on Thursday morning at home, with her daughters by her side.

She was born in Coeur d’Alene in 1939 to Emma and Reinhart Fredekind.

She attended high school in Moscow, and received her degree from the University of Idaho.

She married Bob Compton in 1960 and they lived in Boise and Bonners Ferry, ID, and then moved to Spokane in the early 1970’s.

Valarie was a high school English teacher, homemaker, Regional Director for Church World Service, and a dedicated volunteer for a number of causes including Spokane Public Radio, Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Spokane AIDS Network, Meals on Wheels, and Planned Parenthood.

She is survived by daughters Joanna Compton-Dooris and husband, Bill, and their sons Will, Reilly, and Jake; Stefanie Erdahl and husband, Darrin, and their daughters Halle and Hanna; and Alix Compton and husband Aran.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Valarie are welcome at Spokane Public Radio.

Services will be held at Cathedral of St. John’s on Tuesday, November 26 at 4:00pm.
