State control lost

Historically, the insurance industry has been regulated by each state through a department of insurance led by either appointed or elected insurance commissioners. Congress shifted some state control of health insurance to the federal government when the majority of elected members voted for the Affordable Care Act.

The current national health insurance debacle demonstrates why the federal government should never have taken control of even a part of this industry (health insurance). The law imposed a one-size-fits-all insurance plan upon the American people, who were able to have better benefits, regulated premiums and more options under the governance of state insurance departments.

It is impossible to put the toothpaste back in the tube on this law, but let the mess remind our elected officials in Congress to avoid further blunders in taking away state control over areas where they do a much better job.
