Anteaters defeat EWU men

From news services
IRVINE, Calif. – Luke Nelson scored 19 points and Alex Young added 16 as UC Irvine defeated Eastern Washington 81-58 Sunday on the final day of the 2K Sports Classic. The Anteaters (4-3) held a 20-14 lead midway through the first half, and surged with a 23-8 run to lead by 21 at the break. Young hit a trio of 3-pointers in a span of just over a minute in the second half to put UC Irvine ahead 65-34, its largest lead. Nelson and Young combined to hit nine of UC Irvine’s 11 3-pointers. Will Davis II finished with 10 points and Mamadou Ndiaye blocked eight shots. Tyler Harvey scored a game-high 21 points and had nine rebounds, but was the only scorer in double figures for the Eagles. Drew Brandon had 10 boards. Eastern Washington (4-2) couldn’t overcome the deficit, shooting just 30 percent from the field and netting four of its 21 3-point attempts. The Eagles’ poor shooting night followed a sterling 64 percent effort in a 102-70 victory over LIU Brooklyn on Saturday. EWU defeated Boston University 80-68 in its opener at the tournament. “We packed two games of energy in our suitcases for a three-game weekend,” said EWU coach Jim Hayford. “I did like that our players showed great character … even though our shots weren’t falling. “We wanted to come down here and play three games and see what it’s going to take. We are going to have to have more depth and better legs on the third day if we are fortunate enough to have this type of experience later in our schedule at the Big Sky Conference tournament.”
