Education Notebook: LC students present ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’
Lewis and Clark Tiger Drama will entertain audiences with its production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” Dec. 5-7 and Dec. 12-14 in the auditorium at 7 p.m.
The musical, set in the 1920s, tells the story of small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, played by Vanessa Butler. Millie leaves her home in Kansas for the bright lights of New York City, determined to marry – for money, not love. While enjoying her “thoroughly modern” flapper lifestyle, Millie finds friends, an unexpected romance, and trouble, when she almost gets mixed up in a white slavery ring. The show is full of razzle-dazzle, fun musical numbers and, of course, tap dancing.
Other cast members are Tanner Azzinaro as Jimmy Smith; Genevieve Alexander as Miss Dorothy Brown; Will Dubiel as Trevor Graydon; Anna Maguire as Mrs. Meers; Melina Palomba as Muzzy VanHossmere; Kezia Rhodes as Bun Fo; and Liam Schaaf as Ching Ho.
Tickets are $10 per person and may be purchased at the door.
Parental guidance is suggested, as some material may be inappropriate for children.
River Day School collecting textiles
The students at River Day School, 1627 E. Trent Ave., will hold a textile drive, beginning Monday.
The drive is a fundraiser for the school, as well as a community service project. Gemtext, a Northwest-based sustainability company that repurposes and recycles donations, will pay the school for the textiles.
Members of the community are invited to donate unwanted textiles such as clothing, shoes, stuffed animals, handbags, belts, blankets or towels. Carpet will not be accepted. The classrooms are competing against each other to collect the most poundage per student to win gift bags. The drive will run until Dec. 20.

St. George’s places in math scramble
St. George’s School students demonstrated their math smarts recently when the school placed 20th in the 2013 Team Scramble. The event is a national mathematics contest administered by National Assessment & Testing.
During the scramble, students had 100 problems to solve in 30 minutes. The top 25 scores ranged from 43 to 81.
St. George’s will participate in National Assessment & Testing’s 2013 Ciphering Time Trials on Dec. 12 and the 2014 Four-by-Four Competition on Jan. 30.
