Neal lifts United over RSL 1-0 for US Open Cup

Lewis Neal scored in the 45th minute and D.C. United won its third U.S. Open Cup title with a 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on Tuesday night. Neal collected a loose ball in the box and the midfielder slotted it inside the post past a diving Nick Rimando. RSL, playing at home in Sandy, Utah, controlled the possession and had more scoring chances, but couldn’t crack United’s defense. Sebastian Velasquez unleashed a shot that hit off the crossbar in the 59th minute. United goalie Bill Hamid deflected Alvaro Saborio’s volley in the 81st minute and caught Devon Sandoval’s bicycle kick in the 94th. United last won the Cup in 2008. – AP
