WSU’s Railey suspended from team indefinitely

College basketball: WSU head basketball coach Ken Bone announced the suspension of junior center Jordan Railey from the team on Tuesday for a violation of team rules.

There is no timetable for Railey, who transferred to WSU from Iowa State in 2012. The suspension comes a week after Bone indefinitely suspended junior guard Danny Lawhorn.

The 6-foot-10 Railey sat out last season as a redshirt in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. While he played sparingly during his two years with the Cyclones, he has showed a penchant for defense.

Chiefs in search of record start

Junior hockey: In their previous 28 years, the Spokane Chiefs have never started the Western Hockey League season 5-0.

That would change tonight if the Chiefs win at Portland. Spokane (4-0-0-0) matched the club record of the 1992-93 Chiefs by defeating Tri-City 2-1 Saturday.

Portland, the defending WHL champion, is 2-1-0-1 but tied for the league lead with 24 goals scored.

M’s Hultzen has surgery

MLB: Top Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen has undergone surgery on his left shoulder to clean up his labrum and repair a partial tear of his rotator cuff.

The team said there is no timetable on Hultzen’s recovery.

Hultzen, selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 draft, was expected to be the first of Seattle’s young pitching prospects to make his major league debut in 2013 before injuries slowed his progress.

AFL returning to Portland

AFL: The Arena Football League is returning to Portland.

A news conference to announce the new franchise is scheduled for today. The team is owned by Terry W. Emmert, chief executive of Clackamas-based Emmert International, a transport and relocation company.

Emmert says there will be a contest to name the team, which will play starting in March at the former Rose Garden Arena.

Portland was home to the AFL’s Forest Dragons for three seasons until 1999.
