Americans grow lead at Presidents Cup

Golf: The Americans are assured of being in the lead going into the final round of the rain-plagued Presidents Cup.

Zach Johnson holed out from the 15th fairway for eagle to complete a swift turnaround and give the Americans yet another point. That was the only foursomes match that finished before it became too dark to continue Saturday at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.

Another rain delay kept the matches from finishing for a second straight day. The Americans had an 11 1/2 -6 1/2 lead with four matches unfinished. The Internationals were up in two of them, the Americans led another and one was all square.

Feng leads after three rounds in Beijing: Chinese star Shanshan Feng shot a 9-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead over American Stacy Lewis after the third round of the Reignwood LPGA Classic in Beijing.

Shrouded in smog, Feng had nine birdies in a bogey-free round to reach 21-under 198.

Lewis finished with a 65.

Auto racing: Matt Kenseth, the winner of the last two Sprint Cup races at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., hopped into his Nationwide car and drove it to victory Saturday, taking advantage of a late wreck involving Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch to conserve enough fuel for the end.

Kenseth crossed the finish line well ahead of Paul Menard, who got around Regan Smith on the final lap to take second. Busch finished in fourth place.

Dixon inches closer to points lead with win: Scott Dixon cut his deficit to eight points in the standings after winning the first race of the Houston Grand Prix on a disastrous day forIndyCar points leader Helio Castroneves.

Castroneves entered with a 49-point lead over Dixon with three events left. But a gearbox issue led to an 18th-place finish.

Blue Jackets rally past Islanders in shootout

NHL: Cam Atkinson scored in the fourth round of a shootout, and Columbus rallied from two goals down in the third period to spoil New York’s home opener with a 3-2 victory.

The Islanders and goalie Evgeni Nabokov seemed to be in complete control before Mark Letestu and Nick Foligno scored 4:19 apart to get even at 2-2 after the Blue Jackets managed only 12 shots in the first two periods.

• Maple Leafs earn SO win over Senators: Mason Raymond and Tyler Bozak scored shootout goals to give Toronto a 5-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators in the Maple Leafs’ home opener.

Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier, outstanding in relief of James Reimer, stopped Milan Michalek – whose shot hit the crossbar and bounced out – and Jason Spezza in the shootout.

• Lightning rally past Blackhawks: Valtteri Filppula scored in the shootout and Tampa Bay rallied for a 3-2 victory on the road over Chicago.

Ben Bishop made 37 saves in his first start of the season for Tampa Bay, and then denied each of Chicago’s three shooters in the tiebreaker.

• Perreault vaults Ducks to OT win: Mathieu Perreault scored at 4:55 of overtime to give the Anaheim Ducks a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul, Minn.

Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller had 30 saves while Niklas Backstrom made 26 for the Wild.

Silver Max ends Wise Dan’s winning streak

Horse racing: Silver Max ended reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan’s winning streak at nine, winning the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Silver Max, a 4-year-old colt, ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.06 to beat Wise Dan by 1 1/4 lengths.

Artemis Agrotera, Havana win at Belmont: Artemis Agrotera and Havana both improved to 2 for 2 with victories in the $500,000 stakes for 2-year-olds at New York’s Belmont Park.

Artemis Agrotera held off Sweet Reason, the 3-5 favorite, by 1 1/4 lengths in the Frizette for fillies.

Havana took charge on the turn and held off Honor Code by a head in the Champagne.

Gymnastics: Defending champion McKayla Maroney of the U.S. beat all-around champion Simone Biles in the vault at the gymnastics world championships in Antwerp, Belgium.

Maroney received 15.724 points, executing two daring vaults with poise and elegance to edge Biles, who finished with 15.595. North Korea’s Hong Un-jong was third.

Earlier, 17 -year-old Shirai Kenzo, of Japan, earned a floor gold medal after becoming the first athlete to execute a quadruple twist at a major final.

A-Rod sues team doctor, NYC hospital

Miscellany: Alex Rodriguez has expanded his assault on baseball with a lawsuit accusing the Yankees team physician and a New York City hospital of mishandling his medical care during the 2012 A.L. playoffs.

The suit claims during an Oct. 11, 2012 MRI exam team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad of New York Presbyterian Hospital did not inform him of the tear in his left hip joint and instead cleared him to continue playing.

Willingham expected on playoff panel: A person with knowledge of the process tells the AP that former Notre Dame, Washington and Stanford coach Tyrone Willingham is expected to be on the College Football Playoff selection committee next year, and former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne has also been asked to be part of the panel.
