Cougs not as bad as it seems

In John Blanchette’s column Sunday (Sept. 29) he wrote that, against Stanford Saturday, WSU wasn’t “cartoonishly overmatched as they’ve been so many times in the 20-teens.”

This didn’t sound right. A quick glance at WSU football scores for 2010 onward shows only two or three losses with a wider margin than WSU-Stanford on Saturday night. Scores aren’t everything but they are indicative. It makes me wonder what the “so many cartoonishly overmatched” games Blanchette is referring to.

Whichever games they might be, the scores from the past three seasons certainly show that WSU hasn’t been cartoonishly overmatched “so many” times in the 20-teens. A few times yes, with perhaps the second best example Saturday night against Stanford. If the match itself wasn’t the problem, then the cartoon nature of so many of the touchdowns was – the dumb WSU interceptions, the wide-open Stanford touchdowns, etc.
