Grizzlies rumble past Vikings
Jordan Johnson threw four touchdown passes and Travon Van and Jordan Canada each topped 100 yards rushing to propel the Montana Grizzlies (4-1, 1-1 Big Sky) to a 55-27 victory over the Portland State Vikings (3-3, 0-2) on Saturday in Missoula.
Johnson had scoring passes of 36, 25 and 10 yards to Clay Pierson, and a 17-yard TD strike to Cam Warren. Van scored on a 42-yard scamper, Canada scored on a 2-yard run and Jordan Tripp recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Montana State 36, Northern Arizona 7: Shawn Johnson ran for 92 yards and a TD and had a 100-yard kickoff return for a score to lead the Bobcats (4-2, 2-0) to a victory over the Lumberjacks (3-2, 1-1) in Bozeman.
Johnson’s 27-yard touchdown run and three field goals by Rory Perez put MSU up 16-0 at halftime. The Bobcats then got a 9-yard TD run by quarterback DeNarius McGhee and a 12-yard TD run by Cody Kirk to build a 29-0 lead.
North Dakota 28, Idaho State 25: Dayo Idowu forced a fumble and Ben Peters recovered it in the end zone for the deciding touchdown as North Dakota (2-3, 1-1) turned back the Bengals (2-3, 0-2) in Pocatello, Idaho.
Peters’ recovery came with 5:53 left in the fourth quarter after Idaho State had closed within 21-17 five minutes earlier.
UC Davis 21, Southern Utah 3: Gabe Manzanares rushed for 175 yards and a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to power the Aggies (2-4, 2-0) to a victory over the Thunderbirds (4-2, 1-1) in Cedar City, Utah.
Randy Wright threw 19 yards to TJ King for the Aggies’ other score.
Sacramento State 37, Northern Colorado 21: Garrett Safron passed for 312 yards and three touchdowns and the Hornets (3-3, 2-0) rode a 31-point first half outburst to a victory over the Bears (1-5, 0-2) in Sacramento, Calif.
