Djokovic beats Nadal for China Open title

Tennis: Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-4 to win the China Open in Beijing for the fourth time Sunday.

The Serb racked up four aces to the Spaniard’s two on the way to winning his fourth title in five years at the China Open.

Nadal is assured of replacing Djokovic atop the rankings by reaching the final.

In the women’s final, top-ranked American Serena Williams easily handled Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-2, 6-2.

Lynx dismantle Dream, win Game 1

WNBA: Maya Moore had 23 points, including three 3-pointers in the first quarter to propel Minnesota from the start, and the Lynx delivered a dominant 84-59 victory over the Atlanta Dream in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals in Minneapolis.

Moore shot 10 for 16 from the floor and grabbed seven boards.

Game 2 is at Minnesota on Tuesday night.

Gophers coach Kill stays home to rest

College football: Team spokesman Paul Rovnak said Minnesota Gophers coach Jerry Kill stayed at home on Sunday to rest. A seizure the day before, the second game-day seizure this season and the fifth in three years, kept him from traveling to the team’s game at Michigan.

The Gophers don’t play again until Oct. 19, allowing the coach some much-needed rest.

• Miami of Ohio fires Treadwell: Miami of Ohio fired coach Don Treadwell, just a day after the RedHawks fell to 0-5 with a 21-9 loss at home to Central Michigan. Treadwell went 8-21 at his alma mater.

The school didn’t immediately appoint an interim coach. Offensive coordinator John Klacik was also fired.

• Irish lose two to injury: Notre Dame lost middle linebacker Jarrett Grace and senior receiver Daniel Smith for the rest of the season. Grace was lost for the season with a broken right leg against Arizona State. Smith was lost to a broken left ankle that will require surgery.

• Georgia offense takes hit: Georgia running back Keith Marshall and wide receiver Justin Scott-Wesley will miss the rest of the season after injuring their right knees Saturday during a overtime victory at Tennessee.

Canucks survive battle with Flames

Miscellany: Mike Santorelli scored his second goal at 3:17 in overtime to lead Vancouver to a 5-4 win over the Flames in Calgary, Alberta.

The Canucks scored three straight goals in the third period to lead 4-3, but with Flames goaltender Joey MacDonald on the bench for a sixth attacker David Jones sent the game into extra time with 19 seconds remaining in regulation.

• Donovan ties MLS mark: Landon Donovan scored twice in the first half, tying the MLS career goals record of 134 held by Jeff Cunningham, in the Los Angeles Galaxy’s 5-0 win over Chivas USA in Carson, Calif.

• Treve takes Arc de Triomphe: Three-year-old French filly Treve put on an impressive burst of speed in the final straight to outclass the field and win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Race favorite Orfevre finished a distant second, followed by Intello and Kizuna in the world’s richest turf race.
