CV bests U-Hi in Valley rivalry

What began as a blowout wound up an entertaining football game between longtime Spokane Valley rivals.

But the 28-0 lead Central Valley built in the game’s first 29 minutes was too much for plucky University to overcome, losing 42-21 Friday night during the Titans’ homecoming.

The game was filled with plenty of offensive fireworks. There were six plays of 48 yards or longer, including back-to-back touchdowns when U-Hi quarterback Jeff Beaty hit Trevor Martin on an 80-yard bomb and Bears OB Adam Chamberlain raced 73 yards on the first play afterward. .

“Chamberlain’s amazing,” CV coach Rick Giampietri said. “He made some great runs and did a spectacular job.”

Chamberlain burst 48 yards for the game’s first score, had a 63-yard run that set up CV’s second score and threw a TD pass to tight end Scott Peck to make it 21-0 on the first play of the second quarter. He finished with 212 yards on eight attempts.

Teammate Spencer Miller gained 188 yards, with a 55-yard TD run.

Down four touchdowns, U-Hi fought back, scoring twice before intermission.

Beaty threw for 298 yards and three TDs, all to Trevor Martin, who accounted for all 21 points and 162 receiving yards. U-Hi (1-5) had 600 yards total offense.

“I didn’t think the game was going to get over,” Giampietri said. “They gave us fits. … It was a good win though.”
