In brief: Chattaroy couple killed on U.S. Highway 2

A Chattaroy couple were killed Sunday in an auto collision on U.S. Highway 2 about 4 miles north of Spokane, the Washington State Patrol said.

Floyd L. Nordhagen, 92, and Kathryn M. Nordhagen, 88, died when the car he was driving turned into the path of a northbound pickup truck about 4:30 p.m., the WSP said.

Nordhagen was attempting to turn onto East Lane Park Road near a Big R store in Mead.

Neither occupant of the truck was injured.

Weekend accidents kill three in North Idaho

Wrecks claimed three lives on North Idaho highways over the weekend.

Two Silver Valley residents died early Sunday morning in a head-on collision on Interstate 90 in Kellogg.

Melissa A. Connors, 32, of Osburn, and Shannon D. Wheeler, 38, of Silverton, died shortly before 2 a.m., Idaho State Police said. Wheeler was a passenger in a 1999 Hyundai Accent that Connors was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-90 at the Bunker Avenue interchange. The car struck a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Buffie D. McMahon, 40, of Tucson, Ariz.

McMahon was injured as were two of her passengers, Cherokee Bresetee, 20, of Paso Robles, Calif., and Matthew Shubert Jr., 17, whose hometown was not listed. All three were taken to Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene.

The freeway’s eastbound lanes were closed about four hours.

Saturday night, Jeffry H. Muir, 53, of Moscow attempted to pass a vehicle on his 2011 Harley-Davidson Fatboy near Troy, Idaho, the ISP said.

Muir failed to negotiate a curve on state Highway 8, went off the road and was thrown from the motorcycle. He died at the scene, police said.

Both crashes are under investigation.

Former NPR host will present at SFCC Oct. 28

Award-winning journalist Michele Norris will give two free presentations at Spokane Falls Community College on Oct. 28.

Norris, creator of “The Race Card Project” on National Public Radio, will speak with students for a lecture, question-and-answer and book signing in SUB Lounges A, B and C, Building 17.

She will present to the community at 5:30 p.m. in the SFCC Music/Performing Arts Building 15 auditorium, followed by a book-signing. Doors open at 4:45 p.m.

Norris is a former co-host of NPR’s “All Things Considered.” She was also an ABC news correspondent.

Norris has received the Peabody Award, duPont Award and Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists.

Train hits Seattle man; third time in three days

SEATTLE – A man is dead after he was struck by a train in Seattle, marking the third time in three days that a train has hit a pedestrian in the area.

The latest incident happened late Saturday near Lander Street, BNSF Railways spokesman Gus Melonas said. A train consisting of three locomotives struck a 25-year-old man who was on the tracks.

Another man was struck by a train and died in the same area Thursday evening.

Earlier Thursday, a man was struck by a BNSF train at Titlow Beach near Tacoma and taken to a hospital. His condition wasn’t available Sunday.
