Kings shut out Panthers for third straight win

NHL: Ben Scrivens made the most of his first start in goal for the visiting Los Angeles Kings.

Scrivens had 20 saves to record his third career shutout and the Kings beat the Florida Panthers 3-0 on Sunday.

Jordan Nolan had a goal and an assist. Justin Williams and Daniel Carcillo also scored goals for the Kings, who won their third straight game.

Scrivens, acquired in a trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs in June, made his first start of the season as regular goalie Jonathan Quick, one of the best in the NHL, was given a rest. All three of Scrivens’ NHL shutouts have come against Florida.

• Klinkhammer guides Coyotes: Rob Klinkhammer scored his second goal of the game 22 seconds into the third period to help the Phoenix Coyotes defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 in Raleigh, N.C.

Shane Doan, Mikkel Boedker and Lauri Korpikoski had Phoenix’s other goals. Mike Smith made 31 saves for the Coyotes.

Cam Ward made nine saves after coming on with 10:08 left in the second period to replace starter Anton Khudobin. Khudobin suffered a lower-body injury when he skated out to play the puck.

• Ducks defeat Senators: Corey Perry had two goals, Jonas Hiller made 30 saves, and the Ducks beat Bobby Ryan and the Ottawa Senators 4-1 in Anaheim, Calif., for their fourth straight win.

Captain Ryan Getzlaf and Nick Bonino also scored for the Ducks, who were Mighty again as the team celebrated the 20th anniversary of the franchise’s 1993 debut.

Ryan scored his 150th career goal in his first game back in Anaheim since the Ducks traded him last summer.

• Jets blank winless Devils: Al Montoya made 24 saves for his fourth NHL shutout and Evander Kane scored twice in the Jets’ 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Jets snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 3-3-0 on the season.

Kane added an empty-net goal with 57 seconds left for his third of the season, and Andrew Ladd beat Devils goalie Cory Schneider 20 seconds later.

Montoya was making his first start of the season.

Ethiopia’s Desisa claims Boston Half

Running: Reigning Boston Marathon champion Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia won the Boston Half in a course record time of 1 hour, 34 seconds.

It was the third race of the Boston Medley since the bombing in April at the finish line of the Boston Marathon killed three people and injured more than 260.

Kenyans Daniel Salel and Stephen Sambu entered the stadium side by side. They finished in the same time of 1:00:41, but Sambu won the $100,000 prize for the lowest combined time in the 5K, 10K and Half of the Boston Medley.

Kim Smith of New Zealand easily defended her title in 1:09:14. She also earned the $100,000 prize for the lowest combined time.

• Kenya’s Kimetto wins Chicago Marathon: Dennis Kimetto of Kenya broke the course record in winning the Chicago Marathon – the first major marathon in the United States since the Boston bombings in April.

Kimetto finished in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 45 seconds, easily beating the mark of 2:04:38 set by Ethiopia’s Tsegaye Kebede last year. He pulled away from countryman Emannuel Mutai over the last few miles and was all alone with both arms raised as he crossed the finish line.

It was his second major victory this year to go with a win at Tokyo in February.

Lin leads Rockets to win in Taiwan

NBA: It was a perfect homecoming for Houston point guard Jeremy Lin in Taiwan.

Lin, whose parents emigrated from Taiwan to the United States in the 1970s, scored 17 points and went 3 for 4 from behind the 3-point line to help the Rockets overcome the Indiana Pacers 107-98 in an exhibition game played before a capacity crowd of 13,686 in Taipei, Taiwan.

James Harden led all Rockets scorers with 21.

George Hill contributed 17 points for the Pacers, but suffered what coach Frank Vogel called “a mild ankle sprain” in the third quarter.

Van, Alexander earn ski jumping titles

Winter sports: World champion Lindsey Van and Nick Alexander won the US Ski Jumping Championships on the K90 Olympic hill in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Van, from Park City, Utah, scored 250 points with jumps of 92 and 96.5 meters for her 16th U.S. title.

Alexander, from Lebanon, N.H., had 263.5 points on two 99-meter jumps for his second national title.

Jessica Jerome of Park City was second in the women’s competition, followed by Alissa Johnson of Park City. In the men’s event, Nick Fairall of Andover, N.H., was second, followed by Anders Johnson of Park City.

• Hansen, Mazdzer, Hyrns and Sherk snag U.S. luge titles: Chris Mazdzer, Kate Hansen and the doubles team of Jacob Hyrns and Andrew Sherk captured titles at USA Luge’s national championship.

Mazdzer finished two runs in 1 minute, 46.498 seconds on the track at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, N.Y., posting the two best times of the men’s competition.

Hansen was a bit of a surprise winner in the women’s race, finishing in 1:30.136 to beat Julia Clukey’s time of 1:30.326.

Hyrns and Sherk edged Matt Mortensen and Preston Griffall for the doubles title by less than one-tenth of a second.

Djokovic tops del Potro in Shanghai

Tennis: Novak Djokovic successfully defended his title at the Shanghai Masters, holding off Juan Martin del Potro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3) in a 2 1/2-hour final.

Del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open champion, failed in his third attempt to win a first Masters title.

He fended off two match points late in the third set, but couldn’t put any pressure on Djokovic’s serve down the stretch and appeared to tire in the tiebreaker.

• Top-seeded Kerber takes title in Linz: Top-seeded Angelique Kerber won her first WTA title of the season and third overall by defeating former two-time champion Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 7-6 (6) at the Generali Ladies in Linz, Austria.

Ivanovic rallied from two breaks down to tie it 4-4 in the opening set before dropping her serve for a third time.

Velazquez breaks jockey money mark

Miscellany: John Velazquez broke Pat Day’s career earnings record for jockeys at Belmont Park in New York.

Velazquez finished second in the ninth race aboard Bit Bustin to pass Day. Bit Buston earned $15,400, lifting Velazquez’s career total to $297,922,320. Day retired in 2005 with $297,914,839.

The 41-year-old Velazquez and Day are members of racing’s Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs.

• Pedrosa wins Malaysian Moto Grand Prix: Dani Pedrosa of Spain won the Malaysian Moto Grand Prix in Sepang, Malaysia, for the second straight year.

Pedrosa, who started fifth on the grid, went to the front at the start and completed the 20-lap race under hot conditions in 40:45.191.

Fellow Spaniard and MotoGP rookie Marc Marquez completed a Repsol Honda Team one-two in 25:46.974, edging Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo. The reigning world champion rounded out the podium for Spain in a time of 25:48.321.
