In brief: Boy, 6, drowns in cruise ship pool

MIAMI – A 6-year-old boy drowned in one of the pools aboard a Carnival Cruise Lines ship while at sea, the company said Monday.

The Carnival Victory was on the last leg of a four-day Caribbean cruise Sunday when the boy drowned in the midship pool. He was at the pool area with other family members at the time.

“To the best of our knowledge it is the first time a child has drowned aboard one of our ships,” Carnival spokeswoman Joyce Oliva said in an email.

Amtrak reports record ridership

WASHINGTON – Railroad officials say Amtrak carried a record number of passengers in the year ending Sept. 30 despite Northeast service being temporarily knocked out by Superstorm Sandy.

The nation’s passenger railroad network carried 31.6 million riders during the 2013 federal budget year. Amtrak’s long-distance routes recorded their best ridership in 20 years with 4.8 million passengers.

Ridership for all of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington reached 11.4 million passengers, the second-best year for the corridor.

Dry ice explodes again at airport

LOS ANGELES – Police say a second dry ice explosion has occurred at Los Angeles International Airport, but there are no reports of injuries.

Detective Gus Villanueva said the incident occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday at the airport’s Tom Bradley International Terminal.

Investigators don’t believe the incident is linked to terrorism.
