Died Promising British driver Sean Edwards, son of former Formula One driver Guy Edwards, died Tuesday in a crash during training. He was 26. Edwards, the Supercup Championship leader, was in the passenger seat as an instructor for a private training session at Queensland Raceway at Willowbank, outside Brisbane, Austrailia, Porsche Motorsport said.

Out Columbus Blue Jackets forward Matt Calvert underwent surgery to repair an abdominal injury. Calvert is expected to be out for approximately six weeks for the NHL team.

• Detroit Pistons guard Brandon Jennings is expected to miss three weeks because of problems with one of his wisdom teeth. Jennings was acquired in a trade this NBA offseason to be Detroit’s new point guard, part of an overhaul that also brought free agents Josh Smith and Chauncey Billups to the Pistons.

• Utah Jazz guard Trey Burke underwent surgery to repair his fractured right index finger. Burke, the ninth overall pick in this year’s NBA draft who was acquired in a trade with Minnesota, will wear a cast or splint for the next three weeks before being re-evaluated. Burke suffered the injury during a preseason game Oct. 12 against the L.A. Clippers.

Pleaded The girlfriend of former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez pleaded not guilty to a perjury charge connected to the murder case against him. Shayanna Jenkins was arraigned in Fall River, Mass., Superior Court and released on personal recognizance.

Granted Forward Wanaah Bail was granted full eligibility by the NCAA to play the upcoming basketball season for UCLA after the freshman’s waiver was approved. Bail is recovering from left knee surgery and hasn’t been cleared to return to practice. He had surgery to repair torn cartilage on June 28 and was originally projected to miss four months.

Assigned Veteran goalie Martin Biron and rugged forward Arron Asham are being assigned by the New York Rangers to Hartford of the AHL after clearing waivers. The moves were announced one day after the players were placed on waivers following New York’s rough 1-4 start to the NHL season.

Suspended Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta was suspended by the NHL for 10 games for an illegal check to the head of Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson last week. The punishment, which will cost Kaleta $152,439 in lost salary, was handed down by the league’s Department of Player Safety. Kaleta is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players’ association.
