CdA coach Amos gets big day from QB Amos

It has been an emotional rollercoaster for Coeur d’Alene High football coach Shawn Amos, who was diagnosed last week with a form of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Amos was a coach and a dad on Friday as he took part in Senior Night, hugging son Gunnar, a senior quarterback, during pre-game ceremonies. Next Thursday, Amos anticipates his first chemotherapy treatment, one day before a showdown against rival Lake City.

The third-ranked Vikings sent their 23 seniors out in style as Gunnar Amos accounted for five touchdowns, four passing and one running, to power Coeur d’Alene’s 54-14 rout over outmanned Skyline.

“It was pretty special,” coach Amos said. “It’s been a perspective week or two. We’ve been through the downs and its ups now, nothing but good news as far as what we’re dealing with. We’re feeling pretty good about it.”

Amos’ team was sharp coming off a bye week. The Vikings (4-3) put up five touchdowns in the first quarter, led 51-0 at half and scored on their first nine possessions. Coeur d’Alene didn’t punt until the final seconds of the third quarter.

Skyline (2-5), a 5A school in Idaho Falls, made the Vikings’ job easier with a failed on-side kick to open the game, two first-half fumbles and shaky special teams play that set up Coeur d’Alene in great field position.

CdA needed just 16 plays to score its first six touchdowns. Amos tossed touchdown passes to Chase Blakley, Ryan Walde, Jonny Plum and Addison Johnson. Amos also ran 11 yards for another score. Ty Holgate added two rushing touchdowns.

“We got healed up during the bye week and that helped. They were ready to go,” Shawn Amos said. “We’re the healthiest we’ve been all year. We actually weren’t healthy for the season opener because Gunnar had strep throat.”

Amos completed his first 11 passes and finished 18 of 25 for 226 yards.

“We’re playing pretty well at the right time,” Shawn Amos said. “Lake City is Lake City, but in league these are all playoff games with only one (state) playoff berth.”
