Huskies tied for first after beating Stanford

The Washington volleyball team moved into a tie for first place in the Pac-12 after the sixth-ranked Huskies defeated No. 7 Stanford 14-25, 25-21, 25-11, 22-25, 15-12, on Sunday in Seattle.

Junior All-American Krista Vansant had her first career 20-20 match with a match-high 23 kills and a career-best 20 digs for UW.

Brittany Howard had 14 kills to lead the Cardinal (13-4, 6-2).

The victory put the Huskies (15-1, 7-1) into a first-place tie after USC suffered its first Pac-12 defeat against Arizona on Sunday.

Men’s soccer

Whitworth collected three goals in the first 35 minutes and went on to a 4-1 win over Pacific Lutheran (9-3-3, 4-3-2 Northwest Conference) in Spokane.

Sam Selisch scored his sixth goal of the season at 2:07 and Balin Larson his first on a penalty kick at 23:12 to give the second-place Pirates (8-3-2, 6-2-1) all the scoring they would need. An own goal off a free kick made it 3-0 at 34:33. Sam Engle scored off an assist from David Starkovich for Whitworth’s other goal.

Women’s soccer

Idaho came back from two one-goal deficits only to lose their third overtime game of the season, 3-2, to Utah Valley in Moscow. Haley Curtis scored at 94:29 to give the Wolverines (7-8-1, 5-3-1 Western Athletic Conference) the victory.

Gabby Leong scored in the first half off an assist from Katie Baran, and Kavita Battan scored in the second half for the Vandals (3-12-0, 3-5-0).

• Whitworth (6-6-3, 3-5-3 Northwest Conference) and Pacific Lutheran (6-3-5, 4-1-5) played to a scoreless tie in Spokane. Whitworth outshot the Lutes 21-9.

Rowing

Gonzaga finished eighth out of 21 entries in the Women’s Championship Four race at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. The Bulldogs’ Varsity 4+ boat finished the 3-mile race in 19 minutes, 23.707 seconds.

The race was against the clock with crews starting in 15-second intervals.

Two U.S. Rowing boats took first and second with the winner finishing in 18:02.219.
