WHL notes: Ex-Chiefs goalie Engel joins Regina
Former Spokane Chiefs goaltender Mac Engel found a new home with the Regina Pats.
The Pats claimed Engel, 20, off waivers from the Prince George Cougars last week.
Engel played 47 games for Prince George last season after the Chiefs traded him for a fourth-round pick. Engel compiled a record of 42-28-3-4 during his time in Spokane.
“I’m very determined,” Engel told Greg Harder of the (Regina) Leader-Post. “This organization has given me the opportunity. That’s all I wanted. I just want to go out and prove myself to everyone – especially this organization – that I can play in the league.”
Engel, a veteran of 135 WHL games, owns a career record of 52-51-4-10.
Everett bounces back
Everett (8-2-2-0) regrouped after Friday’s 4-2 loss at Spokane, returning home to defeat Kamloops 1-0 on Saturday and Swift Current 4-1 on Sunday.
Austin Lotz, who started in goal all three games, shook off the loss to the Chiefs to take over the WHL lead in goals-against average (1.74) and save percentage (.935). Spokane’s Eric Williams (1.76, .933) is second in both.
In the win over Kamloops, the Silvertips’ Kohl Bauml played hero 30 minutes after a huge hit left him down on the ice for several minutes.
Bauml took a nasty open-ice hit from Kamloops defenseman Ryan Rehill midway through the second period and stayed down while attended to by athletic trainer Marc Paquet. He made it off the ice under his own power and returned to score the game’s lone goal early in the third period.
Rehill received a 5-minute major penalty for interference and a game misconduct.

After Saturday’s 4-2 victory at Moose Jaw, Regina has won six consecutive games for the first time in six seasons. … Brandon center Chad Robinson played the 200th game of his career on Saturday as the Wheat Kings toppled visiting Medicine Hat 6-3. Brandon begins its road swing through the U.S. Division on Friday at Spokane. … Kootenay Ice rookie Hudson Elynuik scored his first career WHL goal, which happened to be the winner, in Saturday’s 4-3 victory at Edmonton. … Portland forward Nicolas Petan was named WHL Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday after he totaled two goals and five assists during three Winterhawks wins. … … Lethbridge forwards Jaimen Yakubowki and Sam McKechnie asked to be traded prior to last Friday’s practice and were sent home. The Hurricanes are 2-11-0-1. … The Kootenay Ice acquired forward Tim Bozon and defenseman Landon Cross from Kamloops on Tuesday, sending forward Collin Shirley, defenseman Matt Thomas and three draft picks to the Blazers.
