Retired Three-time U.S. figure skating champion Johnny Weir retired and will join NBC for its coverage of the Sochi Games. Weir spent 16 years in the sport, going to two Olympics. He will begin his broadcasting career on Sunday during the network’s coverage of Skate Canada. Weir finished fifth at the 2006 Olympics and sixth in 2010. Joining Weir on NBC’s team for Sochi will be 1998 gold medalist Tara Lipinski, the youngest Olympic figure skating champion when she won in Nagano at age 15, and 2006 silver medalist Tanith Belbin. With ice dance partner Ben Agosto, Belbin came in second at the Turin Olympics. The Winter Olympics begin Feb. 6.

Suspended Dallas Stars forward Ryan Garbutt was suspended for five games without pay by the NHL for charging Anaheim Ducks forward Dustin Penner. No penalty was called on the play in the first period of the Stars’ 6-3 road loss to the Ducks on Sunday night. The suspension will cost Garbutt $14,744.

Exercised The Cavaliers picked up the fourth-year contract options on All-Star guard Kyrie Irving and forward Tristan Thompson. The team also exercised the third-year options on guard Dion Waiters and forward Tyler Zeller.

Sidelined Still recovering from right knee surgery, skier Lindsey Vonn has decided to skip Saturday’s season- opening race in Austria, preferring to return next month. She’ll return at the races in Beaver Creek, Colo., from Nov. 29-Dec. 1.

Punished NASCAR ordered Richard Petty Motorsports development driver Corey LaJoie to undergo sensitivity training for an insensitive tweet. LaJoie was also placed on indefinite probation. The tweet suggested TSA should conduct a cavity search of a man wearing a turban.

Died Sports-talk radio pioneer Bill Mazer, who was also was a fixture in New York television during a 60-year career, died Wednesday at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. He was 92.

Remaining Junior-eligible player Sean Monahan will remain with the Calgary Flames this season instead of being returned to his junior club. Monahan, 19, has six goals and three assists in his first nine games.
