Bulldogs to play Bishop Kelly for title

Corinne Ariss and Nan Kiebert scored to guide the Sandpoint girls soccer team to a 2-0 win over Middleton in a 4A State semifinal match Friday in Caldwell, Idaho.

The Bulldogs will play a familiar foe – Bishop Kelly – in today’s title match. The Knights topped Sandpoint for the state title in 2010 and 2011. Bishop Kelly has won the last three state titles and five of the last six.

Bishop Kelly advanced with a 4-0 win over Century.

Lake City 4, Hillcrest 2: The Timberwolves built a 2-0 halftime lead and held on to beat the Knights in a 5A State loser-out match at Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian, Idaho.

Lake City will play Highland today in the consolation title match.

Highland 3, Post Falls 0: Mackenzie Van Sickle had a hat trick as the Rams blanked the Trojans in a 5A State elimination match at Meridian High School. Reece Baver assisted on all three goals.

Coeur d’Alene Charter 2, Teton 0: Katie Baxter had a goal and an assist as the Panthers avoided elimination with a win over the Redskins in a 3A State match at Vallivue High School in Caldwell, Idaho.

Mary Nicklay also scored and keeper Jackie Jensen made eight saves for Coeur d’Alene Charter, which will take on Shelley in today’s consolation title match.

Shelley 3, Bonners Ferry 1: Jasmin Vega had a hat trick and the Russets defeated the Badgers in a 3A State elimination match at Vallivue High School. Mackenzie Mendell scored Bonners Ferry’s goal.

Greater Spokane League

Central Valley 7, North Central 0: Kelsey Turnbow scored all three of her goals in the first 13 minutes and the Bears (12-1, 8-1) blanked the visiting Indians (4-8, 2-7) to secure the GSL title. Alaina Bates added a goal and an assist for CV.

Mt. Spokane 2, Mead 1: Mackenzi Gray’s 58th-minute goal broke a 1-all tie and gave the Wildcats (9-4, 5-4) a win over the host Panthers (12-2, 7-2). Chae Brown scored for Mead, which entered the match tied with Central Valley atop the league standings.

University 2, Shadle Park 0: Kelsi Walker and Sarah Melvin scored to give the Titans (8-4, 7-2) a win over the visiting Highlanders (3-9, 1-8). Walker’s goal came on a penalty kick in the 14th minute.

Lewis and Clark 1, Ferris 0 (shootout): Hadyn Gabbert, Emma Chappell, Julianna Mulvey and Jacqueline Hamby all scored in the shootout to give the Tigers (11-3, 6-3) a win over the Saxons (8-6, 4-5) at Spokane Falls Community College.

Boys soccer

Lake City 3, Madison 1: Kade Murphree, Ryan Swallow and Alec Maldanado all scored to lead the Timberwolves past the Bobcats in a 5A State consolation match at Eagle High School in Eagle, Idaho.

Tanner Horton made fives for Lake City, which will take on Post Falls in today’s consolation title match.

Post Falls 2, Idaho Falls 0: Cody Sullivan and Timmy Mueller scored to power the Trojans past the Tigers in a 5A State match at Rocky Mountain High School. Noah Gondo made eight saves for Post Falls.

Jerome 3, Lakeland 0: Antoni Granados scored two goals to lead the Tigers to a shutout of the Hawks in a 4A State semifinal match in Caldwell.

Cade Coffey stopped 12 shots for Lakeland, which will play Mountain Home today for third place.

Community 3, Bonners Ferry 2: Roger Figge scored twice and Community edged the Badgers in a 3A State elimination match at Vallivue High School in Caldwell. Jake Tremble scored both Bonners Ferry goals and Caleb Blackmore made 11 saves.

Volleyball

University def. Ferris: Alex Douglas had nine aces as the Titans (7-1) kept pace with Shadle Park and Mead atop the Greater Spokane League standings with a sweep of the visiting Saxons (2-6). Scores were 25-20, 25-3 and 25-14. Sydney Schlect added 11 kills and six digs for University.

Lewis and Clark def. North Central: Gabby Norton and Emily Romasko had six kills apiece to lead the Tigers’ (3-5) sweep of the visiting Indians (0-8) in a GSL match.
