Former Ferris High athlete Devlin wins at Whistler
Jeff Devlin had quite a triathlon debut.
The former Ferris High cross country standout selected Ironman Canada in Whistler, British Columbia, last Sunday for his first attempt at the swim-bike-run event, winning the men’s 18-24 age category with a time of 10 hours, 13 minutes, 10 seconds.
Devlin, who finished third in a national high school cross country event in 2006 during his senior year at Ferris, was the only qualifier from his age group to the World Ironman Championships in Kona, Hawaii, on Oct. 12. He lives in Seattle.
Devlin’s brother-in-law, Chris Shogan of Spokane, competing in his second Ironman, timed 10:31.38 to finish 41st in the 30-34 age group.
Awards
Tamara Browder Hageage, an Eastern Washington assistant women’s soccer coach, has been selected for induction into the Toledo (Ohio) City League Hall of Fame in the Class of 2013 on Nov. 4.
Hageage, the Eagles’ goalkeepers coach for 13 years, had a storied career at Toledo’s Calvin M. Woodward High from 1987-90. She competed in football, soccer and baseball with the boys, while running track and playing basketball with the girls teams. She excelled in all five sports, earning a total of 15 varsity letters and compiling an array of postseason honors that included the league soccer defensive MVP three times and twice was the track and field MVP. As the Woodward place-kicker she became the first female to score in a City League football game.
She went on to compete at Colorado College for a year and the University of Washington for three years in women’s soccer and played internationally in Russia, Denmark and Canada from 1997-99 until an injury ended her playing career. Hageage, married to George Hageage III, EWU’s women’s soccer coach, has been coaching since her playing days ended.
Baseball
Northwest Premier, with players from Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls and Spokane, captured the 14-and-under Triple Crown D2 World Series at Steamboat Springs, Colo., Aug. 7-11.
The team, sponsored by Premier Sports Center, played in 11 tournaments, compiling a 51-24 record in a season that began in March. It had 19 hits and two home runs in the title game to cap a 4-2 tournament run.
Team members are Talon Dewey, Connor Killen, Jacob Morgan, Kallen Langley, Derek Galloway, Kaleb Reid, Matt Siva, R.J. Clancy, Cam Horn, Colin Spendlove, Reggie Nault, Wyatt Setian and Dakota Lovins.
The coaches are Troy Nowell, Shannon Horn, Travis Galloway and Lucas Morgan.
College scene
Four Washington State rowers – Jordan Watson, Mickey Aylard, Nicole Hare and Morgan Cathrea – combined to win three gold medals at the 2013 Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec, the first two weeks of August.
Aylard, a junior, and Watson, a sophomore, were in the British Columbia boat that defeated Saskatchewan for the gold in the women’s four. Cathrea, also a sophomore representing British Columbia, was in the winning women’s eight boat.
Hare, another Cougars sophomore, represented Alberta in women’s single scull, double scull and quadruple scull. She captured gold in the single scull, placed second in the quad scull and third in the double scull. She was the only athlete from a province other than B.C. or Ontario to earn a gold.
Washington State’s Mollie McCabe also recently competed in Canada. The senior rowed at the 131st Royal Canadian Henley Regatta for the Brockville Rowing Club in the 2,000-meter senior women’s quad, placing fifth.
• Seniors Laurie Yearout from Lewis and Clark and Mary Rogers from Shadle Park are among 42 Western Washington athletes who received 2012-13 Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Awards.
Yearout, a volleyball standout with a 3.65 grade-point average in English/secondary education, received the honor for a third straight year. Rogers, a cross country/track and field athlete with a 3.88 GPA in Spanish/linguistics, was honored for a second straight year.
