Injured Puig day to day

Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig was out of the starting lineup Tuesday, a day after he aggravated a right knee strain.

Manager Don Mattingly said the Cuban slugger probably will not play against the Rockies.

“I’m not going to run him out there ’til he’s ready, ’til he’s feeling he’s going to be able to play full speed because he’s not really a guy that plays half speed very well,” Mattingly said. “Once he gets out there and feels like he can turn it loose, then we’ll turn him loose.”

Puig is batting .351 with 14 homers and 32 RBIs in 80 games in his first season in the majors. He remains day to day.

Also Tuesday, outfielder Matt Kemp, who has been on the disabled list since July 22 with a left ankle sprain, traveled to the Dodgers’ complex in Arizona to get in some concentrated hitting work in a series of simulated games over the next several days.

In the midst of a breakout season, Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has earned a college degree. Goldschmidt officially secured his bachelor’s degree in management from the University of Phoenix when grades were posted last week. … The Rangers have activated right-hander Alexi Ogando from the 15-day disabled list. Texas also recalled right-hander Ross Wolf and outfielders Engel Beltre and Joey Butler from Triple-A Round Rock. … The Tigers have recalled pitchers Jeremy Bonderman and Jose Alvarez and catcher Bryan Holaday from Triple-A Toledo. … The Athletics have recalled left-hander Tommy Milone from Class A Stockton and righty Evan Scribner from Triple-A Sacramento. Oakland also purchased the contract of righty Pat Neshek from Sacramento to add pitching depth for the September stretch run. … Indians two-time All-Star closer Chris Perez pleaded no contest and was convicted of misdemeanor drug abuse for marijuana shipped to his home in the family dog’s name. … Indians pitcher Justin Masterson will miss at least one start because of a strained left oblique, another blow to a team that’s struggling to stay in playoff contention. … The Royals recalled pitchers Wade Davis and Louis Coleman from Class A Wilmington. They also recalled left-hander Donnie Joseph and infielder Johnny Giavotella from Triple-A Omaha, and purchased the contracts of infielders Pedro Ciriaco and Carlos Pena from the Storm Chasers. … The Padres have signed outfielder Will Venable to an $8.5 million, two-year contract extension.
