• An international jury has levied the harshest penalties in the 162-year history of the America’s Cup, docking defending champion Oracle Team USA two points in the finals against Emirates Team New Zealand and expelling a key sailor. The penalties announced against the syndicate are for illegally modifying prototype boats in warmup regattas last year and earlier this year. Oracle Team USA must win 11 races to retain the silver trophy. Team New Zealand must still win nine races in the series, which starts Saturday.

• Arkansas says it won’t use a T-shirt launcher at War Memorial Stadium this weekend after a marketing intern was injured at last weekend’s game. The school said a pneumatic launcher was lying on the artificial turf when it discharged Saturday. An intern was treated at a hospital and released.

• The world’s richest soccer league is getting even richer, even as the wealth of English clubs also benefits teams overseas. In less than three months during the European transfer window, more than $2.3 billion was spent by clubs in the continent’s top five leagues – with a third of that shipped by Premier League sides overseas, according to the accounting firm Deloitte.
