Victim identified in Okanogan County shooting death

A man shot and killed Monday while hunting for grouse in Central Washington was identified as 52-year-old Michael R. Carrigan of Hoquiam, Wash., by the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office. Carrigan and 65-year-old George Stover, also of Hoquiam, were driving along Cow Camp Road on the Pontiac Ridge near the Canadian border when Stover said they spied a bird roosting in a nearby tree. Carrigan left the vehicle to line up a shot, but missed twice. Stover reported hearing another gunshot and then witnessing Carrigan staggering toward the vehicle and saw blood. Stover said he heard another shot and then sped off to call law enforcement. Multiple agencies responded after the call came in at 7:15 p.m. Carrigan was declared dead at the scene of a gunshot wound. Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said the death is being investigated as a homicide. The occupants of a residence about 100 yards from the shooting scene have been interviewed and evidence has been collected, he said. No arrests have been made, but the Sheriff’s Office does have “a person of interest,” according to a news release. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
