Obituary: Anderson, Durward C.

Age 98

ANDERSON, Durward C. Durward Clifford “Andy” Anderson, age 98 of Spokane passed away Monday, September 02, 2013 at Hospice House of Spokane.

Durward was born April 4, 1915 in Warden, WA.

He graduated from Ewan High School in 1934, attended Eastern Washington College of Education where he graduating in 1940 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

While there, he met Teddi Stephens whom he married October 24, 1940 and they enjoyed a wonderful marriage for nearly 73 years.

Throughout 32 years of being an educator he taught all levels from first grade through high school and was often the head teacher or principal.

He taught in many small towns throughout the state of Washington and moved to Spokane in 1957 where he finished his last 17 years at Jefferson Elementary in the Spokane School District from which he retired in 1974.

Durward also coached football, basketball, baseball, track and boxing and had many championship teams and individuals.

In retirement Durward and Teddi loved traveling and with the exception of three states, they visited every state in the union.

He also loved puttering around the house and yard and fishing in Rock Lake and Williams Lake and, at the age of 93, he landed a 42 inch tiger Muskie at Newman Lake.

He was also very active in track and field, in officiating and competing, holding numerous event records and was awarded the Inland Empire Masters Track Athlete of the Year in 1996 at the age of 81.

He continued to compete until the age of 95.

One of the highlights of his life was attending and supporting his children and grandchildren’s endeavors.

He was very proud of his accomplishment of becoming an Eagle Scout and even more proud of the fact that five of his grandsons also became Eagle Scouts.

Durward is survived by wife, Teddi Anderson, three children: Patty Schieche (husband Jerry) Spangle, WA.

Jan Anderson (wife Pat) Spokane, WA., Jo McDonald (husband Alan) Newman lake, WA.

Seven grandsons: David, Steven, and Rick Schieche: Jim and Dan Anderson: Scott and Lance McDonald, and nine great-grandchildren.

Durward was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Services to be held Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 1:00 pm at RIPLINGER FUNERAL HOME, 4305 N. Division, Spokane WA., Graveside Service following at 4:00pm, in St. John, WA, at the St. John Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Spokane Shriners Hospital for Children or a charity of your choice in Durward’s name.
