Cards capture thriller

Medical Lake overcomes five turnovers in victory

Medical Lake overcame five turnovers and two touchdowns called back because of penalties to stage a come-from-behind, 32-28 nonleague football win over St. Maries in the Cardinals’ season opener at home Friday night.

Junior fullback Jackson Tappero bulled 10 yards to reach the goal line with 7:05 left in the game only to fumble into the end zone, but senior Taylor Masteller recovered for the go-ahead touchdown.

Medical Lake trailed 28-20 going into the fourth quarter. Back-up fullback Roman Kissack carried seven times on an 11-play, 70-yard drive and barreled in from the 3 with 10:52 left to make it 28-26.

Tappero had three touchdowns rushing.

Luke Feasline rushed for three Lumberjacks scores.

Cheney 30 East Valley-Yakima 8

Cheney traveled to East Valley-Yakima and defeated the Red Devils.

The Blackhawks were led by Andrew Graham under center, completing 10 of 23 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns in the air and one on the ground.

For East Valley, Kris Janis had 15 receptions for 123 yards in the loss.

Priest River 33, Kettle Falls 7

Jimmy Koch passed for 341 yards and accounted for four touchdowns, Dallas Hopkins caught six passes for 121 yards and visiting Priest River beat Kettle Falls.

The Bulldogs looked poised to make a comeback after Connor McKern returned a Koch interception 80 yards for a touchdown, but the Spartans (1-0) defense did not allow a point the rest of the way.

Koch overcame four interceptions by rushing for three touchdowns and throwing an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Perkins.

McKern led the way for Kettle Falls with 48 yards on seven carries.

Newport 34 Bonners Ferry 7

At Newport, the Grizzlies put up 21 points in the second quarter en route to a victory over the Badgers.

Senior quarterback Ryan Rapp connected with fellow senior Jeron Konkright three times in the end zone.

Rapp added two additional touchdowns on the ground. He threw for 127 yards and ran for 133. Konkright had four receptions for 55 yards.

Christian Trocke scored the only touchdown for the Badgers on a 1-yard touchdown run.
