Gonzaga Prep rolls 42-13

Thomas directs potent offense

Gonzaga Prep dominated Lewis and Clark with an impressive 42-13 pasting Friday night in a Greater Spokane League opener at G-Prep.

Bullpups quarterback Kevin Thomas threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Nick Wood, a 25-yard TD pass to John Mackey and then ran for a 17-yard score.

“The defense played well up front. Our senior leadership on defense was outstanding,” G-Prep coach David McKenna said. “These are fun kids to coach.”

Bullpups running back Jack Bamis carried the load with several long runs, including touchdown runs of 1 and 7 yards. But he also had a fumble at the goal line that ended up as a touchback for the Tigers.

“He’s green, but he did a great job,” McKenna said.

The Tigers struggled to get much going, but quarterback Andrew Black did break several tackles en route to a 61-yard touchdown run. He later added a touchdown pass to Jake Hufnagel, but the game was already out of reach.

“We didn’t play very well,” Tigers coach Dave Hughes said. “We had way too many mental mistakes.”

One play that typified the night for LC occurred during a drive into Bullpups territory when the center snapped the ball over Black’s head and Gonzaga Prep recovered at the Tigers 45.

But McKenna praised the LC quarterback after watching him break several tackles.

“He’s a tough player, but we’ve got to tackle better,” McKenna said. “I do give him credit. He broke the tackles.”

Along with Thomas and Bamis, Bullpups receiver Nick Wood had a monster night. He turned what looked to be an interception into a 29-yard reception on a drive that ended with a Bamis touchdown run.

Wood had touchdown receptions of 38 yards from Thomas and another short strike from backup quarterback Liam Bell.

Behind Bamis’ bulldozing runs and big plays from the arm of Thomas, Gonzaga Prep made it look easy.

“Kevin Thomas is an outstanding young man,” McKenna said. “And not just in football. He’s a great leader of this team.”
