GU upsets ranked UCSB

Clark Phillips scored in the 29th minute and Ben Striar added an insurance goal late as Gonzaga (1-1) upset nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara 2-0 on Friday in a nonconference men’s soccer match in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The Gauchos (2-1)  were ranked anywhere from 15th to 24th in four polls.

The last time Gonzaga (1-1) defeated a ranked opponent was Sept. 7, 2007, when the Bulldogs downed 15th-ranked Washington 2-1 in Spokane.

Ryan Caballero recorded his sixth career shutout.

Women’s soccer

Ariana Holmes’ 25th-minute goal was the difference in Fresno State’s 1-0 nonconference win over Gonzaga in Spokane.

Gonzaga (1-3) had its opportunities – the Bulldogs outshot Fresno State 14-5 – but couldn’t get any past Bulldogs (1-3) keeper Katie Devault.

• North Dakota State scored two quick goals in the second half and held on to beat Idaho 3-2 in a nonconference match in Fargo, N.D. The teams traded goals in the first half, but North Dakota State’s Holly Christian scored in the 66th minute and Anisha Kinnarath added a penalty-kick goal in the 68th minute to give the Bison (2-3) a 3-1 lead. Elexis Schlossarek added a late goal for the Vandals (0-4).

Volleyball

Savannah Blinn and Meredith Crenshaw combined for 23 kills and Gonzaga (1-3) earned its first win of the season, sweeping UNLV at the Gonzaga Invitational at the Martin Centre in Spokane.

Set scores were 25-20, 25-21, 25-19.

GU’s Kathleen Wright had 10 digs and Lauren Joseph and Janelle Futch combined for 36 assists.

Sekola Falemaka had 14 kills and nine digs for UNLV (2-2).

• Washington State improved to 5-0 after sweeping Eastern Washington and Texas Tech at the Cougar Challenge in Pullman.

Against EWU’s Eagles, Ver’Leea Hardaway and Krya Holt had 11 kills each and Jaicee Harris chipped in 10.

Following their loss to WSU, the Eagles (2-4) fell to South Dakota (4-2) in five sets.

• After sweeping Whitman in its opener, Whitworth was blanked by St. Benedict on the opening day of the Whit Invitational in Spokane. The Pirates (2-4) were led by Kristine Kardell and Jalana White, who combined for 26 kills, in defeating the Missionaries (2-5) 26-24, 25-18, 25-19.

Whitworth fell 25-17, 25-17, 25-23 to St. Benedict (7-0).

• After Idaho rallied to force a final set, Cal State Northridge (4-0) went on a 10-1 run in the fifth and beat the Vandals 18-25, 25-23, 25-16, 22-25, 15-8 at the Fiesta Classic hosted by Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Jessica Hastriter had 17 kills and Katelyn Peterson added 13 kills and eight digs to lead the Vandals (3-2).

• CC of Spokane won two of three games at the opening day of the Spokane Invitational at Spokane Falls CC.

The Sasquatch beat Chemeketa and Columbia Basin and lost to Highline.

Golf

Kent Brown of Colville shot an even-par 71 and took first place at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship qualifier at Spokane CC.

Jeff Sweat of Spokane took second place after shooting a 1-over 72.

Brown and Sweat both qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, which will be held Oct. 5-10 at the Country Club of Birmingham in Birmingham, Ala.

• Steve Prugh, the head professional at Manito Golf and Country Club, shot a 1-under 70 during the second and final round of the PNW Senior PGA Championship in Lakewood, Wash. Prugh finished in a five-way tie for seventh.

Deer Park GC professional Craig Schuh finished tied for 15th after shooting 4 over for the two days.

Mark Gardner, the head professional at The Creek at Qualchan, finished tied for 22 at 7 over.
