Theater offerings changed

I was saddened, but not surprised, to read that the Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre has closed its doors. I was one of those who, in the past, enjoyed many fine performances by a cast of great performers. However, I am also one of those who for the past few years have stopped attending, with the exception of a few still remarkable shows, including “Mary Poppins.”

I noticed, as a regular season ticket holder in years past, that many of those in the audience were in the “older” crowd. As the pick of shows deteriorated into what I considered the more raunchy and less classy, and sometimes actually distasteful, I stopped attending. I am wondering if those others who stopped coming and supporting felt the same?

The article in the Aug. 29 paper stated that the theater existed to “serve our audience.” Maybe they were not serving those who actually had the financial means to support them.
