Wrigley back to defend SAWGA

Eight-time defending champion Beth Wrigley will headline the field for the 51st Spokane Area Women’s Golf Association Championship Tournament Tuesday through Thursday.

A field of 103 will compete in five flights for gross and net prizes at three courses – Sun Dance on Tuesday, The Creek at Qualchan on Wednesday and Liberty Lake on Thursday.

The championship will go to the woman with the lowest gross score over the 54-holes. Wrigley, a 2-handicapper from Indian Canyon, has claimed that honor every year starting in 2005. Lisette Carter from Manito, who carries a 1-handicap and won the title four straight years from 1999-2002, is also entered.

College scene

  Andrew Furney, Washington State’s senior kicker, is one of 30 from Football Bowl Subdivision schools named a candidate for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award in college football.

The award’s name is an acronym for “celebrating loyalty and achievement for staying in school.” Candidates are selected based on their achievements in the community, classroom and athletics, as well as character.

Furney is a double major in marketing and finance who entered his senior year with a 3.26 GPA. He has participated in a number of special class and community projects while at WSU and ranks in the top five in several school career kicking categories. And for a second straight year, he is on the Lou Groza College Place-Kicker Award preseason watch list.
