In memory: As the nation commemorates the thousands of lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, a local fire lieutenant is working to commemorate the 17 firefighters who have died in the line of duty since the creation of Spokane’s fire department in 1890. Spokane Fire Department Lt. Greg Borg holds a 1910 Spokane Fire helmet in the lobby of Fire Station No. 3 on Tuesday. Borg has compiled a list of firefighters who have died in the line of duty and is trying to raise funds to place plaques at the locations of their deaths.
