Cataldo Catholic School fifth-grader’s art makes Highlights

The magazine Highlights for Children has picked a drawing by 10-year-old Duncan Cooper to be published in its October edition.

Duncan, who’s in fifth grade at Cataldo Catholic School and the son of Noah and Teresa Cooper, calls his drawing “A Rainbow in Ireland” and it shows a rainbow over green grass, dotted with raindrops.

“I got the idea because my family is Irish,” Duncan said, adding that he has not been to Ireland but he would love to go some day.

Highlights for Children was first published in 1946 and it receives more than 35,000 submissions of art and writing created by children all over the world. The magazine has printed more than 1 billion copies.

“I sent them a few drawings,” Duncan said. “I only draw sometimes, mostly because I can’t think of stuff to draw.”

Cooper’s favorite parts of Highlights for Children are the craft pages and the section called Your Own Pages, which features submissions from readers.

“They also have really cool stories,” Duncan said.

His favorite subjects in school are social studies and art.

“I also like to read a lot,” Duncan said, “and I just started swim team.”
