Furyk fires record-tying 59 at BMW
Golf: Jim Furyk birdied two of his last holes, stuffing a gap wedge into just over 3 feet on his final hole at the BMW Championship in Lake Forest, Ill., and knocked in the putt to become the sixth player in PGA Tour history to shoot 59.
This at least gave Furyk a share of the lead Friday at the BMW Championship with Brandt Snedeker, who was nine shots clear of Furyk at the start of the day and shot 68.
It was the first 59 on the PGA Tour since Stuart Appleby in the final round of the Greenbrier Classic in 2010.
The others with a 59 were Al Geiberger in the 1977 Memphis Classic; Chip Beck in the 1991 Las Vegas Invitational; David Duval in the 1999 Bob Hope Classic; and Paul Goydos in the 2010 John Deere Classic.
Also Friday, Tiger Woods was assessed a two-shot penalty before he left the golf course after video evidence indicated that his golf ball moved ever so slightly as Woods was removing a twig behind the first green.
That turned a double bogey on No. 1 into a quadruple-bogey 8 and it turned his 70 into a 72, five shots behind the leaders.
• Miyazato leads wet Evian Championship: Mika Miyazato of Japan shot a 6-under 65 to take the lead after the rain-delayed first round of the Evian Championship in Evian-Les-Bains, France, the year’s fifth and final major.
Top-ranked Inbee Park got off to a bad start with a 74 after the tournament was shortened to 54 holes after Thursday’s play was washed out.
• Noh takes lead at Web.com Tour event: Seung-Yul Noh shot a 6-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in Columbus, Ohio.
Noh had a 9-under 133 total in the third of four events in the Web.com Tour Finals series.
Spokane native Alex Prugh shot a 2-under 69 in the second round for an even-par 142 total.
Lithuania, Ukraine win at Euro champs
Basketball: Pooh Jeter carried Ukraine to an 82-75 victory over Serbia in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and revived his team’s hopes of making the quarterfinals of the European championships.
Earlier, Lithuania moved closer to a spot in the quarterfinals with an 86-67 win over Belgium.
Nadal helps Spain to lead in Davis Cup
Tennis: Fresh off his U.S. Open victory, Rafael Nadal returned to Davis Cup play for Spain and helped his country to a 2-0 lead over Ukraine in a World Group playoff.
Nadal overwhelmed Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-0, 6-0, 6-4 on the outdoor red clay at the Caja Magica in Madrid.
In the first singles match, Fernando Verdasco beat Alexandr Dolgopolov 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
• Serbia, Canada tied in Davis Cup semifinal: Milos Raonic of Canada served 34 aces to outlast Janko Tipsarevic in five sets and tie the Davis Cup semifinal with Serbia at 1-1 after the opening singles matches in Belgrade, Serbia.
Raonic beat Tipsarevic 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 in a 4-hour, 11-minute marathon on an indoor clay court at Belgrade Arena. Earlier, top-ranked Novak Djokovic swept past Vasek Pospisil 6-2, 6-0, 6-4.
American Horner captures Vuelta lead
Cycling: American veteran Christopher Horner took the overall lead of the Spanish Vuelta in a mountainous 19th stage through Oviedo, Spain, won by Joaquim Rodriguez.
Entering the day in second place behind overnight leader Vincenzo Nibali, the 41-year-old Horner pulled away from the Giro d’Italia champion over the final uphill ascent to turn a 3-second deficit into a 3-second lead with just two days to go.
Appeals court affirms Bonds’ conviction
Miscellany: The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld former Giants slugger Barry Bonds’ obstruction-of-justice conviction stemming from rambling and “evasive” testimony he gave during a 2003 appearance before a grand jury investigating elite athletes’ use of PEDs.
If Bonds’ conviction stands, he will have to serve the 30 days of house arrest and two years of probation he was sentenced to after his 2011 trial. Prosecutors had sought a 15-month prison sentence.
• Flooding postpones Fresno State-Colorado game: The college football game between Fresno State and Colorado scheduled for today in Boulder, Colo., was postponed because of flooding that’s devastating the state. No makeup date has been announced.
• Blues, Pietrangelo agree to seven-year deal: The St. Louis Blues and defenseman Alex Pietrangelo agreed on a seven-year, $45.5 million contract with a no-trade clause over the final three years, ending a brief holdout.
