LDS Day of Service draws almost 700

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held a community service day last weekend that drew about 700 volunteers to projects all over Spokane County. Two more volunteer projects are planned for Saturday.

On the menu this weekend is rebuilding the gazebo in the Fairfield City Park and doing yard work at the Rose Pointe Nursing Home at 13013 E. Mission Ave.

The work in Fairfield, located south of Spokane Valley on Highway 27, will begin at 9 a.m. Workers at Rose Pointe will be asked to trim bushes, weed flower beds and mow lawns from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Bring rakes, lawn mowers and other gardening tools if you would like to help out.

The Latter-day Saints created the annual Day of Service in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Last weekend, volunteers did yard work at dozens of private homes and did clean-up work at the Rockford Fairgrounds, University High School and the Chester Cemetery.

The local Latter-day Saints congregations are now looking at having such volunteer events more than once a year, said Mindy Wright. “We want to be serving throughout the year,” she said.
