Pirates edge NC to open GSL season

Brittni Fencl had 18 kills and Mercedes Rucker added 26 digs as Rogers outlasted host North Central 25-11, 27-25, 18-25, 17-25, 15-11 on Thursday night in a Greater Spokane League volleyball opener.

Taylor Dewey-Buchanon added four aces and five blocks for the Pirates.

Rachael Childers had seven kills and three aces for the Indians, and Malia Conant added 11 assists and three blocks.

In other GSL openers, Kristina Volz had eight kills and Payton Douglass added 14 digs as defending champion Mead posted a 3-0 win at Lewis and Clark. Joslyn Bopray led LC with five kills and four blocks. … Sydney Schlect had 10 kills and 11 digs to guide University to a 3-0 win at Shadle Park. Kylie Collins added 16 assists and Alex Douglas and Kendall Collins had four aces apiece for the Titans. Maggie Jarvis had five aces and Chloe Brooks added 19 digs for the Highlanders. … Maria Adams and Sophie West had seven kills apiece as visiting Gonzaga Prep outlasted Ferris 3-2. Sara Mackin added 18 assists and 17 digs for the Bullpups.

• Ashley Seiler had 22 kills and five aces as Cheney (2-0) posted a 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 24-26, 15-13 win at East Valley in the Great Northern League. Kimber Case added 25 digs for Cheney. Emily Sior had 44 assists and Jordan Phelan added 18 kills and 19 digs for the Knights (2-1). … Also in the league, Sadie Learn finished with 11 kills and 11 digs while leading Colville (2-1) to a 3-0 win at West Valley (0-3). Hannah Smith added 25 assists for the Indians. Taija Williams led the Eagles with six kills and two blocks. … Tori Ziemantz totaled 11 kills and 20 digs as Clarkston (2-1) rallied for a 24-26, 17-25, 25-13, 25-14, 15-13 win at Deer Park. Hailey Denton added 35 assists and four aces for the Bantams. Sierra English-Largent had 16 kills and 26 digs for the Stags (0-2).

• Andee Wendt had 11 kills and McKenna Stewart and Amber Eixenberger added 16 digs apiece to lead Kellogg (2-0) to a 3-1 win over visiting Timberlake (0-2) in the Intermountain League.

Boys soccer

Gunnar Skindlov scored in the 80th minute to allow host Coeur d’Alene (5-0-2, 1-0-1) to forge a 2-all tie with Lake City (4-0-1, 1-0-1) in Inland Empire League 5A play. Devin Kohles scored in the seventh minute to give CdA the early lead, but the Timberwolves moved ahead on goals by Dylan Flolo in the 11th minute and Kade Murphee in the 28th. CdA reported that its goalkeeper, Garrett Boyce, suffered a concussion on the final play of the game when he struck his head on the post.

Girls soccer

Caitlin Barber and Cameron Wendlandt scored first-half goals to launch host Lake City (3-2, 2-0) to a 3-0 win over Coeur d’Alene (1-5, 0-2) during an Inland Empire League 5A match before a crowd of 500. Maddi Ward’s unassisted score in the 72nd minute capped the scoring. Tiegan Horton recorded the shutout for LC.

• Freshman Micaela Verdal had a hat trick to lead host East Valley (3-2, 3-1) to a 7-0 win over Cheney (3-3, 2-1) in the Great Northern League. The Knights’ Chelsea Love and Alex Rankin had one goal and one assists apiece. EV sophomore twins Maddie and Skylar Bastin added one goal apiece. … Also in the league, Morgan Williams scored in the 17th minute as host West Valley (4-1, 3-1) tallied four first-half goals during a 4-0 win over Colville (1-3, 1-2). Abby Swanson, Madison Wilhelm and Caitlyn Hossfeld also scored for the Eagles. … Brooke Morrow had a hat trick and one assist while powering Clarkston (2-2, 2-2) to a 6-0 win at Deer Park (1-4, 0-3). Katelyn Sly added one goal and one assist for Clarkston.
