A-Rod passes Gehrig

Alex Rodriguez hit the 24th grand slam of his career, breaking a tie with Yankees legend Lou Gehrig for most in major league history. New York’s designated hitter connected off San Francisco Giants reliever George Kontos with two outs in the seventh inning Friday night, sending a drive the opposite way to right-center at Yankee Stadium that gave the Yankees a 5-1 lead. It was A-Rod’s 14th slam with the Yankees, snapping a tie with Joe DiMaggio for second place on the team’s list. All 23 of Gehrig’s were with the Yankees, the only team he played for in his Hall of Fame career. The long ball was the 654th of Rodriguez’s career. He is six homers behind Willie Mays for fourth all-time.
