Christian Caple’s Keys to the WSU-Idaho Game
What went right
WSU’s offense was too fast and athletic for Idaho’s defense, and that showed as quarterback Connor Halliday completed 31 of 43 passes for 346 yards and four TDs. The Cougars’ defense dominated much of the game, frustrating UI and forcing more than a few third-and-longs.
What went wrong
The Cougars probably could have put this one away early in the third quarter if not for three consecutive turnovers, all on Idaho’s side of the field. The first two were fumbles, and the third was an interception thrown by Halliday. But they recovered and won handily, anyway.
Turning point
Already looking at a 14-0 lead, Washington State took over at Idaho’s 20-yard line after
a fumble recovered by safety Taylor Taliulu. Halliday threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to receiver
Vince Mayle on the following play, and the blowout was on.
Difference maker
The Cougars’ entire defense was plenty salty, but sophomore defensive lineman Xavier Cooper frequently had his name called due to his 3.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore reciever Gabe Marks had the best game of his young career, catching 11 passes for 146 yards.
