Homicide suspect arrested in Spokane Valley

Anthony J. Vasquez, 23, was arrested Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, as a suspect in the shooting death of a man found in the parking lot of Moses Lake convenience store on Sept. 17, 2013. (Grant County Sheriff's Office)
Federal marshals and Spokane police arrested a Moses Lake homicide suspect Saturday night in Spokane Valley. Anthony J. Vasquez, 23, was apprehended by Spokane Police Department SWAT officers at 18100 E. Alki Ave. about 9:30 p.m. Vasquez is suspected of shooting and killing Juan Jesus Garcia, 22, outside a convenience store in Moses Lake last Tuesday night. Police received information Saturday that Vasquez was at the Spokane Valley address. SPD’s Patrol Anti-Crime Team, SWAT and K-9 officers and U.S. Marshals set up a perimeter around the house and attempted to persuade Vasquez to come out of the house. The suspect ran out the back door, a K-9 unit quickly located him and SWAT officers apprehended him after a short chase on foot, police said. Grant County sheriff’s detectives came to Spokane to interview Vasquez regarding the homicide. Detectives last week arrested Alejandro N. “Alex” Monzo, 18, on suspicion he drove the vehicle in which Vasquez escaped the shooting scene. A 23-year-old woman and 6-year-old boy who were in the car when Garcia was shot were not injured.
