WSU remains unbeaten

The Washington State women’s soccer team is still unbeaten after a 4-0 win over UC Irvine (5-4-0) in Irvine, Calif., on Sunday.

Micaela Castain scored less than three minutes into the match to give the Cougars (7-0-2) the only goal they would need.

The Cougars have gone unbeaten for 13 straight matches over two seasons, the second-longest active streak in the country.

• Cassie Black tied an Eastern Washington University record with her 17th career goal and the Eagles (2-7-0) notched their first shutout win of the season, 3-0 over North Dakota State (4-6-0) in Fargo, N.D.

• Alyssa Pease scored the match’s first goal in the 20th minute and an own goal gave Idaho (1-7-0) the edge it would need to notch the Vandals’ first win with a 3-1 decision over Grand Canyon (1-7-0) in a Western Athletic Conference opener in Moscow.

• Gonzaga (3-4-1) had to settle for a 0-0 tie with Nevada (2-4-3) in Spokane despite a 29-8 edge in shots.

• Tiara Pajimola’s sixth goal of the season in the 63rd minute gave Whitworth (5-2-1, 2-1-1 Northwest) a 1-0 win over Willamette (2-5, 0-3) in Salem.

Men’s soccer

Lars Ludwigs and Conner Bevans scored to give Gonzaga (4-2-0) a 2-0 victory over Wisconsin (5-1-1), ranked 25th nationally, at the UIC Soccer Classic in Chicago.

• Willamette scored twice after Whitworth (3-2-1, 1-1 Northwest) had to go with 10 players following a red card as the Bearcats (5-1-1, 1-0-1) took a 3-2 overtime victory over the Pirates in Salem.

Golf

Brady Calkins shot a 64 and finished as the medalist with a two-round total of 134 to lead CC Spokane to a 30-stroke NWAACC league match win at Highland GC in Wenatchee. Sasquatch golfers Zach Spencer and Evan Omelia tied at 135.

The CCS women finished fourth with Columbia Basin the winner. Olympic’s Leslie Guzman was medalist at 155. Spokane’s Brigid Rypien was fifth at 165.

• Chelsea Bayley (84-85–169) was Whitworth’s best, finishing tied for 21st , while the Pirates took seventh in the 12-team Pacific Fall Invitational at Quail Valley GC in Banks, Ore. Whitman won behind Catelyn Webber’s two-round total of 8-over-par 152.

Women’s volleyball

CC of Spokane fell in five sets to host Clackamas in the championship game of the Clackamas Crossover in Oregon City, Ore., 25-19, 17-25, 18-25, 26-24, 15-12.

The Sasquatch went undefeated in the two-day tournament until the final.

Earlier Sunday CCS defeated Chemeketa and Skagit Valley, both in three sets.

Hockey

The Spokane Braves picked up their first victory of the KIJHL season, defeating the visiting Summerland Steam 6-3. Taylor Everhart’s goal at 2:58 of the first period gave the Braves (1-5) a 3-2 lead and Jonny Marzec’s goal at 19:08 of the second period would give Spokane the margin it would need to prevail.
