Chiefs power past Royals for 3-0 start

VICTORIA, British Columbia – Mike Aviani scored four goals Wednesday as the Spokane Chiefs continued to make a powerful early impression in the Western Hockey League. Aviani scored two of the Chiefs’ three power-play goals as Spokane improved to 3-0-0-0 with a 6-1 win over the Victoria Royals (1-3-0-0) at Save-on-Foods Memorial Arena. The Chiefs are 7 for 14 on power plays and have outscored rivals 18-5. Mitch Holmberg scored Spokane’s other power-play goal and added three assists. Holmberg has six goals and six assists this season to lead the WHL with 12 points. Aviani is second with nine points and Reid Gow is tied for third with seven. Chiefs goalie Garret Hughson stopped 28 of 29 shots and a second-period penalty shot. Spokane is 6-0 all time in Victoria.
