Obituary: Gettig, Jeanette Ellen (Shaffer)

Age 92

GETTIG, Jeanette Ellen (Shaffer) November 12, 1920- September 11, 2013 Jeanette was born in Boise and grew up at the homestead in the Danskin Mountains of Mayfield, Idaho, before marrying and moving to Spokane, where she spent most of her adult life.

She graduated from the eighth grade in 1934 and married George Gettig a year later.

Together they raised four children, Ted, Juanita, Ed and Elda.

Jeanette was active in her community.

She served for a time as a bookkeeper at Fairchild Exchange.

She worked for the Moose Lodge and from 1959-61 she reigned as Queen of the Moose Lodge.

From 1958-1972 Jeanette worked outside the home as the internal auditor for School District 81.

Jeanette loved the outdoors!

She fished, hiked, dug for clams, and made cactus jelly when she and George were snowbirds in Arizona.

Jeanette became a Master Gardener and produced and marketed mustards.

Music was enjoyed often, whether it was by playing the piano, singing or dancing.

Jeanette performed for about ten years as a roaring 20’s chorus girl with the Hillyard Bells.

She also enjoyed many years of square dancing after taking lessons when she was 69.

Jeanette volunteered for SCOPE in her neighborhood.

Just shy of eighty Jeanette went back to school and earned her high school diploma.

Through Valley Fourth Memorial Church Jeanette helped with the Japanese foreign exchange program.

After losing the love of her life, Jeanette sold their home and retired to Holman Gardens.

There she enjoyed gardening and joined the Red Hat Ladies.

Valley Baptist Church became her new church home.

Church was always an important part of Jeanette’s life.

In her last years she longed to leave this earth for heaven.

Jeanette was loved by many friends and family.

She was a grandmother to thirteen grandchildren and had numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren and was grandmother to many friends’ children.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, her oldest son, Ted, and her youngest daughter, Elda.

She is survived by one sister, Margie (Boise, ID) and one son, Ed Gettig (Cusick, WA) and one daughter, Juanita Patterson (Larimore, ND).

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 28, 2013, at 1:00 PM, at the Valley Baptist Church, 1222 S. McDonald Rd, Spokane Valley, WA.
