Martin claims third win at cycling worlds
Cycling: Tony Martin of Germany won his third straight title in the individual time trial at the road cycling world championships while Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins finished second.
Martin completed the nearly entirely flat 35.5-mile route from Montecatini Terme (Italy) to Florence in 1 hour, 5 minutes, 36.65 seconds. Wiggins, of Britain, finished second, 46.09 seconds behind, and Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland was third, 48.34 behind.
The worlds end Sunday with a 169-mile road race that starts in Lucca.
Buzz Fly into Senior Amateur semis
Golf: Former PGA Tour player Buzz Fly beat Patrick Tallent 5 and 3 in Cashiers, N.C., to advance to the semifinals in the rain- and fog-delayed USGA Senior Amateur.
Fly, will face Pat O’Donnell this morning at Wade Hampton Golf Club. O’Donnell beat David Szewczul 5 and 4.
In the other semifinal, Chip Lutz will play Douglas Hanzel. Lutz beat Ray Thompson 4 and 3, and Hanzel edged Don Erickson III 3 and 1.
• Cohn, Port reach women’s final: Defending champion Ellen Port and Susan Cohn each won two matches at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif., to advance to the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur final.
Port beat Marilyn Hardy 6 and 4 in the morning quarterfinals and topped Mary Jane Hiestand 4 and 3 in the semifinals.
Cohn edged Corey Weworski in 20 holes in the quarterfinals and beat Caryn Wilson 4 and 3 in the semifinals.
Pacers, George extend contract
NBA: The Pacers and Paul George officially announced a contract extension to keep the All-Star forward in Indiana for the next six years. The 6-foot-7 George signed a deal valued between $80 million and $90 million with the chance to reach $100 million if George hits an escalator clause.
• Pistons add Wallace to staff: Former Detroit star Rasheed Wallace, who helped the team win the 2004 championship during his five seasons with the Pistons, rejoined the franchise as a player development coach.
Taurasi makes eighth All-WNBA team
WNBA: Phoenix’s Diana Taurasi tied Lisa Leslie with a record eighth appearance on the All-WNBA team.
Minnesota’s Maya Moore and Lindsay Whalen also made the list along with: Chicago center Sylvia Fowles, the league’s leading vote-getter, and WNBA MVP Candace Parker.
Air Force suspends quarterback Awini
College Football: Air Force QB Jaleel Awini has been suspended from the team.
The Academy said that Awini “is no longer a cadet in good standing and is not allowed to represent the Academy in any outside activities, effective immediately.”
There was no indication of what got Awini in trouble.
• Auburn loses Denson for season: Auburn coach Gus Malzahn says starting wide receiver Jaylon Denson is out for the season. Denson posted on Twitter that he sustained a torn patellar tendon in the LSU game last weekend.
• Suspended BYU player admits to drinking: A suspended BYU football player says he violated the school’s honor code by drinking alcohol and partying in Las Vegas.
Sports Illustrated reports that 23-year-old Spencer Hadley, a senior linebacker from Connell, Wash., is ashamed of his actions. He plans to stay at BYU and is asking forgiveness.
Tigers to reinstate shortstop Peralta
Miscellany: The Detroit Tigers will reinstate shortstop Jhonny Peralta from his 50-game suspension, part of Major League Baseball’s investigation into the Biogenesis clinic.
• MLS hands out penalties: Chivas USA defender Mario De Luna has been fined for violent conduct in the team’s Sept. 21 game against Houston.
The league also punished Montreal and Vancouver for violating the mass confrontation policy in their Sept. 20 game.
The Impact was fined $10,000 and coach Marco Schallibaum was hit with a $2,000 penalty because it was the club’s third infraction. Vancouver received an official warning.
