In brief: Council to meet Thursday instead

SPOKANE VALLEY – The regular Spokane Valley City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been canceled, but a special meeting has been called for 1 p.m. Thursday at City Hall, 11707 E. Sprague Ave.

Items on the agenda include solid waste and potential regulations on public nudity. The meeting is a study session, so no public comment will be taken.

First Harvest Celebration set

LATAH – The southern Spokane County town will host its first Harvest Celebration in the Latah City Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Saturday.

There will be a farmers market, crafts, barbecue, petting zoo, children’s games, a hay ride and more.

There will also be a display of farm implements. The park is located at the corner of Main and Harvey streets.

Fire and Rescue to host open house

NEWMAN LAKE – Newman Lake Fire and Rescue will host an open house next Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Station 1, 10236 N. West Newman Lake Drive.

There will be a chili cook-off, and those attending can sample the batches to find their favorite.

People can tour the Edith House fire safety trailer, look inside a MedStar helicopter and watch a demonstration of the Jaws of Life. Hands-only CPR classes will also be offered.

The fire commissioners will be on hand to answer questions about the need for a new fire station.
