4-star QB commits to UW for 2015
SEATTLE – It didn’t take Washington Huskies football coach Chris Petersen long to land an oral commitment from a quarterback for the 2015 recruiting class.
Jake Browning, one of the top recruits on the West Coast, announced on Monday that he plans to play football for UW.
Browning, 6-foot-2 and 202 to 205 pounds, earned a bevy of regional and national awards after throwing for 5,737 yards and 75 touchdowns his junior season at Folsom (Calif.) High School.
Reached by telephone on Monday, Browning said his commitment is “like a weight lifted off my shoulders.”
“What it came down to was, I liked the coaches and I liked a lot of the players, and it seemed like a good environment where everyone’s trying to get better,” he said, adding that he enjoyed the city of Seattle during his official visit, and was also impressed by the school’s academic credentials.
Former UW coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff recruited Browning while they were at Washington, and Petersen and new quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith – Browning’s primary recruiter – recruited him while they were at Boise State.
Browning said Petersen and his staff moving to UW was “like combining the best of both worlds.”
Browning listed offers from Colorado, California, Oregon State, Washington State, Utah, Boise State and national power Alabama. But he said a desire to stay close to home on the West Coast (he has a 2-year-old sister) and play in a spread offense (the style Folsom uses) kept him from giving Alabama more serious consideration.
Scout.com considers him a 4-star recruit, and ranks him as the No. 7 quarterback in the 2015 class.
Petersen landed a 4-star QB prospect in his first recruiting class at UW – K.J. Carta-Samuels, a native of San Jose, Calif., who signed a national letter of intent in February and will join the team in August.
No charges for Miles
Washington quarterback Cyler Miles will not be charged with a crime in connection with an alleged Feb. 2 assault, according to his attorney, Mike Hunsinger.
However, the Seattle Times reported that receiver Damore’ea Stringfellow will be charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault and one count of malicious mischief in connection with the incident, citing an anonymous source.
The King County Prosecutor’s Office said Monday it is still reviewing the case.
Miles and Stringfellow were suspended indefinitely on Feb. 6. Neither has been arrested.
The investigation stemmed from an alleged assault that occurred in the University District the night of the Seahawks’ victory over the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl.
