In brief: GU’s Haiden Palmer named AP honorable mention

Women’s basketball: Gonzaga University women’s basketball senior Haiden Palmer was recognized as an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press on Tuesday.

Palmer is the fourth Bulldog to earn AP All-America accolades, joining Shannon Mathews (2005), Stephanie Hawk (2007) and Courtney Vandersloot (2009, 2010, 2011).

Palmer, a guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., was named All-WCC this season for the third consecutive year. She led the team in points (15.1), rebounds (5.5) and steals per game (3.0). Her steals per game currently ranks fourth in the nation.

Dower selected to all-star game

College basketball: Gonzaga University forward Sam Dower Jr. has been selected by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) to the West roster for the all-star game on Friday that is part of the Final Four weekend in Arlington, Texas.

The game will be telecast on a tape delay on Saturday at 9 a.m. on CBS.

Dower was a West Coast Conference first-team selection this season as well as being named the MVP of the WCC tournament. He scored 1,264 career points to rank 23rd on the all-time Gonzaga charts and grabbed 568 career rebounds.

Holmberg, Aviani to AHL

Hockey: Spokane Chiefs forwards Mitch Holmberg and Mike Aviani have signed amateur tryout contracts with teams in the American Hockey League.

Holmberg, the all-time goal scorer for the Chiefs (147), signed with the Oklahoma City Barons, an affiliate of the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers. Holmberg’s 62 goals in the just-completed season helped earn him the Bob Clarke Trophy as the WHL’s top regular-season scorer. He finished with 118 pionts in 72 games played. He also led the league in power-play goals with 23.

Aviani, in his fourth and final season with the Chiefs, signed with the Utica Comets, an affiliate of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks. This past season, Aviani set career highs in goals (38), assists (43), and points (81).
