Education notebook: NWC tops in state Knowledge Bowl

Northwest Christian Schools’ Knowledge Bowl Team used their smarts to bring home the title of State 2B Champions at the State Knowledge Bowl competition on March 22 in Arlington.

The students competed in a round of 50 multiple-choice questions with a 35-minute time limit, followed by four preliminary oral rounds of 50 questions each. Their intelligence and understanding brought them to the semi-final and championship rounds, which included oral rounds of 50 questions each.

Northwest Christian’s Knowledge Bowl Team is Chloe Baughn; Phillip Bax; Rebecca Butler; Brendan Hagerty; Shea Montgomery, Chris Hartis; and Matt Salzano. The team is coached by Aaron Spuler, the school’s history teacher and athletic director.

LC thespians show their stuff at festival

Lewis and Clark High School’s Tiger Drama group was recognized for theatrical talent at the 2014 Washington State Thespian Festival, held at Central Washington University March 20-22. The student actors performed their recent production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” had the opportunity to see performances from other schools across the state, and participated in workshops and showcase auditions.

Tiger Drama received a double superior rating, the highest possible rating, for “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Anna Maguire was awarded a $3,000 scholarship for theater marketing. Maguire also received State Recognized in Monologues, National Qualifier in Solo Musical, National Qualifier in Costume Design, and National Qualifier in Theater Marketing. Brie Cole was also awarded a $3,000 scholarship for costume design. Along with her scholarship, Cole received State Recognized in Duo Acting, National Qualifier in Solo Musical, and National Qualifier in Costume Design.
