Gosselin heads JBT all-star team
Jesse Covington and Nik Gosselin were the big winners when the Junior Bowlers Tour wound up its 2013-14 season last Sunday at Lilac Lanes.
Covington came from the No. 2 qualifying spot to knock off top qualifier Shelby Snyder 225-202 to win the JBT finale while Gosselin, who finished fourth Sunday, compiled 195 points to win the season championship and lead the five-player all-star team. Covington, who had rolled a 1,037 in the first five-game series Sunday (a 207 average) before stumbling to a second-place finish in qualifying, was second on the all-star team with 149 points, followed by Justin Oens (114), Dylan Young (111) and Ryan Gately (94).
Snyder, whose consistency Sunday earned her the top qualifying position, was one of the JBT’s hottest bowlers at the end of the season. She compiled 91 points to just miss the all-star team. Her 246 game on Sunday and 195 season average were highs for the girls.
Gosselin and Covington shared high season average for the boys at 216.
Young, who had vaulted from ninth to claim the final roll-off position on Sunday, finished third and Casey Schierholz, who had the day’s high game, a 278, was fifth.
College scene
Track and field athletes Jordan Arakawa and Keisa Monterola were named the Eastern Washington athletic department scholar-athletes of the month for February.
Arakawa, a junior with a 3.93 grade-point average in exercise science/pre-physical therapy, led a 1-2-3 EWU finish in the weight throw at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships. His throw of 65 feet, 8¾ inches produced his first conference championship. His season-best indoor throw of 66-1 ranks second all-time on the school list.
Monterola, a senior with a 3.10 GPA in interdisciplinary studies, capped her EWU career by winning the pole vault at the indoor conference meet with a height of 13-5¾. It was her fourth Big Sky title (two indoors, two outdoors) in five conference championship meets. The former Venezuelan national record holder has exhausted her NCAA eligibility. She shattered the school record indoors (14-4) and outdoors (14-0), and broke the conference record indoors as well.
• Emily Stralser , a Western Washington senior from Cheney, met the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the women’s javelin with a winning throw of 140 feet, 2 inches at the Club Northwest Spring Break Open last weekend in Seattle. During the WWU Combined Events meet this week in Bellingham, Strasler suffered a leg injury during the high jump, the second event of the heptathlon, and withdrew. There was no follow-up report on her status.

Washington State University will hold a reunion for all former track and field student-athletes in conjunction with the school hosting the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships at the Mooberry Track Complex on May 16-18.
