Cougars complete sweep of Golden Bears

Michael Monda’s two-out infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Patrick McGrath to give Washington State a 6-5 Pac-12 baseball victory over Cal on Sunday in Pullman and a sweep of the three-game series.

It was WSU’s first sweep of a conference opponent since 2010.

McGrath led off the 10th with an infield single, went to second on Trace Tam Sing’s third sacrifice of the game and to third on a ground out.

The Cougars scored twice in the ninth to tie the game after the Bears (14-15, 3-6) scored three runs in the top of the inning for a 5-3 lead.

Trek Stemp, Ben Roberts and Nick Tanielu all had two hits for WSU (15-13, 6-3) with Tanielu driving in two. Sean Hartnett (2-0) got the win with an inning of relief.

• Andrew Ely hit a bases-loaded double that scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to rally 14th-ranked Washington to a 5-4 victory over 19th-ranked Oregon in Seattle.

Oregon (22-10, 7-5 Pac-12) scored twice in the top of the 10th to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the inning over the Huskies (22-6-1, 10-2).

• Caleb Wood and Payden Lamb had two hits each for Gonzaga (10-21, 6-6 West Coast Conference) but the Bulldogs fell to host San Diego 5-1 as the Toreros (22-9, 9-3) completed a three-game sweep. Andrew Sopko (2-2) took the loss.

• Whitworth split a Northwest Conference doubleheader against Lewis & Clark (9-16-1, 3-11) in Portland, giving up 19 hits in the opener in dropping an 11-5 decision before coming back with 16 hits in the second game and a 9-2 victory to end a 10-game losing streak.

Whitworth (7-18, 4-10) got a complete game from Cory Mack (3-3) in the second game. He gave up seven hits, walked none and struck out seven. Carson Blumenthal (0-5) took the loss in the opener.

Thomas Wakem had four hits in the second game and six overall while Matt Nelson homered in the win.

Golf

Whitworth’s men’s team won the Northwest Conference Spring Classic at Canyon Lakes GC in Kennewick by 16 strokes with medalist Stephen Plopper leading the way with a 7-over 151 over two rounds.

The women’s team was second, 30 strokes behind George Fox. Nicole Lomax was Whitworth’s top finisher with a 23-over 167 for fourth place, 14 strokes back of medalist Sydney Maluenda of George Fox.

• Washington State’s women’s team finished last in the 15-team Ping/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The Cougars top finisher was Kristen Rue, who placed in a tie for 40th at 7-over 223 over three rounds.

South Carolina won the team title with Washington third. Duke’s Celine Boutier was the medalist at 8-under 208.

Rowing

Washington State’s varsity 8 took third in the Grand Final at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay in San Diego. WSU had two fourth-places and a sixth in other Grand Finals.

In Petite Finals, GU won the varsity 8 and second varsity 8 races and finished second in varsity 4.

GU’s men had a second in the varsity 8 Petite Final and sixth- and seventh-places in Grand Finals.

Softball

Linfield (28-6, 22-2) swept a doubleheader from Whitworth (22-12, 14-8) in Spokane, 6-0 and 5-2, to clinch its 11th consecutive Northwest Conference title. The Pirates had just two hits in the first game and four in the second, including two by Shannon Wessel in the nightcap.
