In brief: Four Smart cars flipped over in San Francisco

San Francisco – Four Smart cars were flipped over in an apparent vandalism spree Monday in two San Francisco neighborhoods.

Police said they didn’t know whether the attacks were a prank or another episode in escalating tensions among some residents who blame the tech industry for rising rents and cost of living.

“It’s hard to determine a motive without any suspects identified or in custody,” said Officer Gordon Shyy, a police spokesman.

Vatican: Jesuit priest assassinated

Beirut – An activist Jesuit priest who spent three years living alongside besieged civilians and rebels in the Syrian city of Homs was assassinated Monday, according to the Vatican, which said he was abducted by unidentified gunmen who beat him before executing him in front of his monastery.

Father Francis Van Der Lugt, 75, a Dutch Jesuit priest, came to Syria in 1966 and eventually founded a home for children and adults with mental disabilities outside Homs.

Rep. McAllister apologizes for kiss

Washington – Louisiana Rep. Vance McAllister has apologized after a video surfaced of the Republican lawmaker in a romantic encounter with a member of his staff.

On Monday, the Ouachita Citizen posted a brief video sent by an anonymous source that shows McAllister, who is married, leaving his congressional office in Monroe, La., after passionately kissing a woman the paper identified as his district scheduler, Melissa Anne Hixon Peacock.

McAllister won a special election in November after a campaign in which he described himself as a “veteran, family man and self-made businessman.”
